Clean Energy and Sustainability Committee

Our Mission and Goals

The committee’s mission is to guide the town of Westford to a future where, by 2050, net emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases attributable to all sources in town are zero.  As part of this mission, the committee will work with other town committees that have an impact on energy use and sustainability to provide advice and expertise on increasing energy efficiency and maximizing the use of clean, renewable energy.

The goals of the committee are to reduce energy usage, improve sustainability, recommend renewable energy sources, shrink carbon emissions, and assist with the reduction of energy-related costs among municipal, residential, and businesses throughout the town.

The committee may also assist the facilities director on energy-related efforts, and shall assist the permanent town building committee on all town facility projects over $50,000, where energy usage is impacted, by reviewing and potentially recommending alternative energy sources, materials, or other options to be used.

Our Top Three Municipal Priorities from the Westford Climate Roadmap

·B1. Implement portfolio wide energy efficiency assessment/audit, including inventory of equipment and building envelope status

·E2. Create a Solar Siting Plan identifying candidate locations for solar PV installations with optimum mix and distribution of sites to meet the town’s energy needs most efficiently

·T1 and T2. Develop comprehensive plan to transition municipal fleet to electric vehicles and provide supporting charging infrastructure

Westford's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action

Our Climate Roadmap priorities align directly with the Westford Strategic Plan 2025. One of the key outcome areas  is the  "Commitment to Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action." The strategies are:

  1. Create a Solar Siting Plan utilizing municipal and school properties
  2. Conduct a portfolio-wide building energy audit and develop a prioritized implementation plan and funding strategy for energy efficient improvements to Town and School facilities
  3. Develop a Fleet Transition Plan toward more energy efficient vehicles with supporting infrastructure
  4. Develop a comprehensive waste reduction strategy to include residential and municipal sectors

CEASC will be working with Town Management and residents to create detailed plans to implement these priorities.
