Proposed Street Acceptance Plans for Special Town Meeting on October 18, 2010

The Board of Selectmen will hold public hearings for street acceptance on September 15, 2010 at 7:45 p.m. in the main meeting room on the ground floor of the JV Fletcher Library located at 50 Main Street. Any person interested or wishing to be heard on the street acceptance proposals should appear at the time and place designated.

 Smile! You're NOT On CameraYou may have noticed that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT) has installed several camera devices along Route 110, Littleton Road. These cameras are actually part of a video image vehicle detection system (VIVDS), and not the controversial "red-light" cameras as seen in other parts of the country. Instead of capturing or recording images, the VIVDS cameras are used by the traffic signal controller to determine the presence of vehicles so that it can change the signals accordingly. The old system of wire detectors in the pavement is not as effective as the cameras and they are often damaged by snow plows or construction work. Since the cost of the cameras is now low enough and more cost effective than wire detectors, Mass DOT has been installing them on more and more projects.
While it may seem like space-age technology, the VIVDS operation is pretty basic. Once a camera has been installed, an image is taken from the "detection zone" and constantly monitored by a computer in the traffic signal controller box. When the software detects a change in the image, the computer calls for a change in the signal or adjusts the timing of the signal to accommodate various traffic volumes. VIVDS on Littleton Road will keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible and prevent vehicles from having to idle at a red light when no other traffic is present. And that gives us all a reason to smile!

About the Engineering Department
The Westford Engineering Department performs the following functions...
1. Reviews various projects submitted to the Planning Department and oversees the construction of many of these projects.
2. Provides engineering services to Departments and Committees in town including, but not limited to, the Planning Department, Highway Department, Police Department, Fire Department, Conservation Commission, Building Department, Town Clerk, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historical Commission, and Board of Health.
3. Provides support to residents, businesses, contractors, consultants, and realtors.
4. Stores, maintains, and updates public records, maps, and plans.
5. Assists in the procurement of professional services for the Engineering Department as well as other town departments.
6. Procures and manages numerous consultant services contracts and is responsible for reviewing, designing, bidding, overseeing, and inspecting of selected town construction contracts.
7. Implements and manages the NPDES Stormwater Phase II program.
